Eagle Mountains

 The Eagle Mountains

The Eagle Mountains (Polish: Gory Orlickie, Czech: Orlickie hory) are located at the northeast of Bohemia and form a natural border with Poland. The main ridge is a 50 km long with a width  of  8 km. The mountains are mostly covered with pine forests and are broken by the river valleys of the Ticha and Divoka Orlice and numerous unnamed streams. A special feature of these mountains is the well-maintained former defensive line of the Czech-German, built between 1936 and 1938. Also worth seeing are the castles of Opoczno, Castolovice, Rychnow and the Gothic castles of Litice and Podstejn. The Eagle Mountains are ideal for long bike rides and for cross-country skiing in the winter, with large slopes and bare, undulating ridges which rise up to Velka Destna (1115 m) making cycling relatively easy. There are approximately 300 km of marked cycling paths but because they often are seamlessly connected to the north of the network at Snieznik and south to the Table Mountains, their total length is much greater.  It’s also important to note that the cycle path markings vary from range, region and country so it’s advisable to obtain multiple cards before setting off.
